The Aussie’s Don’t Go Home Entirely Empty Handed!
It wasn’t just an up and down summer in the npower Ashes; the npower Fans’ Ashes series also offered up a host of twists and turns. The series got off to a great start in Cardiff at an event graced by Graeme Hick, Nick Knight, Jason Gillespie and Ian Harvey. The Barmy Army took the spoils in that first match, but the Fanatics struck back before Lord’s. They won a rain affected match at Regent’s Park that was reduced to nine overs-a-side to level the series. Sadly, the Edgbaston game was abandoned before play could start because of the weather leaving it 1-1 with two to play.
The biggest crowd of the series turned up to Yeadon CC in Leeds to see the Fanatics take a 2-1 lead and so to the final game at Twickenham with the Barmy Army in need of a victory to salvage a draw. It wasn’t to be as the Aussies confirmed their superiority with another win. So the npower Fans’ Ashes trophy will be on a plane back to Australia (or maybe a train to Earl’s Court). There have been many games between the Fanatics and the Barmy Army over the years but this inaugural official tournament was a great success and confirmed the great relationship between the two sets of fans. And while the Barmy Army would have loved to win, they can handle losing that one if the urn is in our hands.
